The Joy of Outdoor Gatherings
Memorial Day often feels like the unofficial start of summer. The days are longer, the weather warmer, and suddenly, our calendars start filling up with invitations to backyard barbecues, park picnics, and neighborhood block parties. Outdoor gatherings offer something special—a chance to slow down, soak up the sunshine, and reconnect with the people who matter most.
Whether you’re hosting or just showing up with a side dish in hand, these moments can be a wonderful source of joy. Here's why—and a few tips to help you make the most of them.
Nature Makes Us Happier
Spending time outdoors is good for our well-being. Studies show that being in nature can reduce stress, boost mood, and even help us feel more connected to others. Add good company, laughter, and something tasty on the grill, and you’ve got a recipe for happiness.
Even a simple meal outside can feel like an event. Swap the dining table for a picnic blanket, add a few citronella candles or string lights, and let the fresh air do the rest.
Connection Without Distraction
One of the best things about outdoor gatherings is how they invite us to be more present. Without the distractions of screens or endless to-do lists, we’re more likely to enjoy real conversations, play games with the kids, or sit quietly watching the sunset.
And because most outdoor get-togethers are casual, there’s no pressure to perform. You don’t have to be the perfect host or bring the perfect dish. Just showing up and being part of it is enough.
Keep It Simple
You don’t need a big budget or a perfectly manicured yard to enjoy the season. A few lawn chairs, some snacks, and a Bluetooth speaker playing your favorite playlist can be all it takes. If you’re hosting, consider a potluck. It takes the pressure off you and lets everyone contribute something they love.
And don’t worry if things aren’t Pinterest-perfect. Happiness doesn’t come from matching napkins or gourmet burgers. It comes from the feeling of being welcomed, seen, and included.
Create New Traditions
Outdoor gatherings are a great time to start new traditions or bring back old ones. Maybe it’s an annual 4th of July cookout, a weekly picnic in the park, or a family cornhole tournament. These rituals, big or small, become touchstones that we look forward to all year long.
A Gentle Reminder
Not everyone feels comfortable in a crowd, and that’s okay. If large gatherings feel overwhelming, try something smaller, like a coffee on the porch with a neighbor or a walk with a friend. The joy of connection doesn’t have to come with a crowd.
As summer kicks off, we hope you find time to gather with your people, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being together. Here's to grilled hot dogs, sticky fingers, shared stories, and a season full of sunshine and smiles.
